Crown Royal Bags

Everyone I have talked to said these things are a mess to work with. Well, they are right!! I am doing a custom quilt for a customer out of Crown Royal Bags. ULCK!! This is about 1/2 of the bags.

Here is the first half cut up into 4 inch squares. I have one with the embroidery and one plain. Dont you like the yellow underneath?? I am using that for some borders. Will look good, I hope.

Center completed. Well, what do you think?? No pattern, just making it up as I go. So far, so good. I will be cutting up the rest of the bags tomorrow. I did add another row, but will let that be a surprise.
This stuff is cheep flannel, it stretches and will shrink. I washed one to see what it will do. I also did the burn test and determined it was cotton.

Tomorrow will be working on this, again. I am aiming for a nice size wall hanging. Wish me luck and stay tuned for the results.

Waynes quilt

Wayne has been at it again. He started this last year, then hunting season came along. You know, eat, sleep and breath Deer!! He finished this up the first of January. He made this all by himself. Even designed it himself. The narrow black and white border that looks like dots is really black peace symbols on white. It turned out good. I am proud of my husband.

Susans quilt. A big one. This is a pattern from Bonnie Hunters book "Leaders and Enders". Susan did hers very scrappy. I just love it. I didnt have anyone to help hold it up, so you get this view and one of the center of the quilt. Dont ya just love it. I do. Think I will add it to the "to do"list. Boy that list is getting long. lol

A very good question. Right here is the answer. But busy. I am the registrar for QSC Spring Meeting. That means lots of mail in and out for about 2 months. Keeps a gal busy, but I enjoy it. Also, I am still busy quilting customer quilts. I just need to get a few pictures taken for you. This week is very busy, a meeting every day but Friday. I think I will crash on Friday. So, keep quilting and think of me while you do.

Missing Snow Family

Some of you know about my missing Snow Family. For the rest of you, here is the story. About 2 years ago Judy Heyword came to our town and taught a class on her pattern, Snow Family. It was a one day class, so we did not finish in class. I worked on it for several months. The top was finished in time for QSC quilt retreat last year (2010), so I took it to show Judy. I put in back in my stuff at retreat and lost it. Got home and could not find it any where. I put out a lost and found ad in the QSC news letter. E-mailed everyone in my class. No where, no one had seen it. About 10 months later I found it in a Barns and Nobles bag ( probably put there to keep clean) on my desk, under some other stuff. Yes, I needed to straighten up, a lot. Wednesday, I have finished quilting and sewed tiny buttons on for the eyes and mouth. It is hanging in the living room for Christmas. It really looks great and I am very happy with my Snow Family. Christmas presents

Two Cuddle quilts for nieces in Texas. Their Dad got back from Afghanistan around the first of Aug. on Labor Day, they lost their house to the fires in Bastrop, Tx. Right now the family is living in a camper trailer. So, I thought cuddle quilts would be the right size. And they are perfect. Their mom said one liked blue and one liked green, so as you see that is what I did. I used the multi colored cat print on both and blue on one and green on the other. I made the back coordinate. I think they look great.

I made 2 t-shirt quilts for a customer for her granddaughters for Christmas. They are so cute. She will pick them up tomorrow, I hope. I had a local embroiderer, Ben at A Stitch in Time< do a block for each, saying love from Grammy. They turned out great.

Tan Quilt

Susan's Tan quilt. She said is was boring. She likes color so it was hard to make this wonderful quilt for her daughter. I think it turned out great, if I must say so myself. The quilting added to it and it looks great. Merry Christmas to a lucky gal.

John C Campbell Folk School

I have been off blog, as opposed to off world, for a few weeks. Lets catch up. I spent the week of Nov 13 at the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. If you are wondering what it is or where, click the link and check it out. They teach all kinds of crafts: pottery, wood working, blacksmithing, cooking and quilting for just a few. Of course, I took a quilting class. With Georgia Bonesteel from ETV fame of Lap Quilting with Georgia. She was a great teacher on ETV and was even better in person. The quilt we made is called Scrap Soup. You can make it scrappy or not. Mine is scrappy, coordinated, kind of.

Here is mine in progress. This much is sewn together with another section ready to sew together. So, I am about half way thru the top. The little green things at the top of the rows are number labels to keep it in order. It is hard to tell, but the background is scrappy navy and dark gray, almost black. The flowers or as Georgia called them, diamonds are a little coordinated.

Here is Georgia holding up a child size quilt in the same pattern. I think this would make a great baby quilt. Notice the scraps are all in the background and the flowers are all the same. It had a very clean cool look.

This is every ones quilt on display the last morning we were there. They are all beautiful. See the 2nd from the right?? This was our over achiever, she just lacked sewing a few rows to having her top finished.

This was a great group of gals. I met new friends and had a great time.

Oh yes, the food was great. I mean really great. Fresh, green, not institutional food at all. And best of all, I didnt gain any weight, yea!!!

Almost forgot to add, Georgia is writing a new quilt book. She hopes to have it out in about a year. This pattern should be in the book, so keep you eye out for her new book.

Crumbs!!!

A little blurry, but at nite the light is bad. What do you think of my crumb blocks. I want to put sashing between them, otherwise they mush too much. So I am testing sashing. From left to right: red, purple, black with navy below it, and yellow. I think I might go with the navy, since I have a bunch of 1 1/2 inch strips already cut the scrap box. Just thought of lime green. Will try tomorrow when the light is much better. There will be one more row down the side and then borders. Just ran out of room on this table cloth design wall. I have to pin everything on or they start falling off when I add new ones to it. Do you see the 16 patch black and white check in the middle? That is left from a border of a Christmas wall hanging that I really need to get quilted. There are 9 patches left over from RRCB, Bonnie Hunters mystery quilt last Nov. Wonder what her new mystery will look like. We will have to wait and see. The first clue goes up on her blog Nov. 18. Check out Bonnies Blog if you want a mystery that will turn out great. I have done 3.

One Block Wonder

Up date status on my One Block Wonder. The blocks are on the design wall. It is a stack and whack type of thing. My fabric sure has a lot of orange in it. This piece of fabric was very slippery and I have had a lot of trouble working with it. Especially cutting it out. I almost trashed it. Now I am to far into it to trash. A lot of these quilts have cubes added, but I decided not to at this point. But subject to change. You know a woman's prerogative is to change her mind.

The great thing about quilt retreat is seeing all of the friends I have made all over our state. I always try to eat my meal with a different group, so I can visit with lots of them.

Tie Quilt

Customers quilt made from men's ties. A group of ladies did these and then drew names for the blocks. My customer won. They lost their house to a fire last year and the blocks were one of the few things saved. I put a spiderweb in one block. Every crazy quilt should have a spiderweb. Some straight line quilting and a few feathers made each block different. I think it turned out very well.

Crumbs

If you read the posts before this one, you will know why I am behind on my Crumb quilt. Here are the blocks, trimmed, stacked and ready to do something with them. So, Jo, I am still working on it. I have 85 blocks. Now I need a plan to put them together. I didnt make any letter blocks. That will be for when I have more time to play.

I am going to John C Campbell Folk School in 3 weeks for a whole week. Guess who the teacher is? Ok, I will tell you. Georgia Bonesteel!!! I am soo excited. I need to get my fabrics ready. I am going to make my quilt scrappy, so I really just need to pick out my back ground. Georgia sent pictures of what we are going to be making, to help us decide what fabrics to bring. I am not tell you now, it will be a surprise.

Quilt Retreat

This past weekend was QSC (Quilters Of SC) Pieceable Retreat. This is an annual retreat for quilters from all over South Carolina. We had a record amount show up, over 300. Lots of new classes and lots of fun was had by all. I took a One Block Wonder Class that was fun. It is interesting to see everyone's fabrics, they were all different. One of the things the teacher, Beth Karr, did was take us on a field trip to the venders, in groups of five. She had each of us pick out a fabric or 2 that we thought would make a OBW. Then she discussed the whys and why nots of each fabric. What a great idea. And YES, I went back and got the magnolia fabric!! Here is a picture of mine from the class, the orange and blue fabrics. See the strip to the right side, that is what I started with. It is amazing what comes out of these. The bottom is one of the other girls in the class, sorry cant remember which one, but great fabric.

This was from 2 fabrics with the exact same print and colors, except for the background. One was cream and the other blue. This quilter made a set from both and combined them. What a great idea and doesnt it look great??

Here is Jodie's. She used a fabric with planets and stars. Looks like Star Trek. Great fabric. Some of my pictures came out dark, so I cant show you all of them.

Next are 2 that Beth, the teacher, has made. The others came out just too dark. Guess it is about time for a new camera. The light was good in the room and I think the flash was working ok, but you never know.

Last, but not least, we had special guests in out class room. Meet Roada and Rhoda. They are quilt traveling rodents. They are supposed to be porcupines, but I think they are too soft for that prickly job. Roada lives with Joyce and Rhoda lives with Beth. Shirt Quilt

This a customers quilt. She made this from the shirts of her granddaughters father, for the granddaughter. she said she added the strips to go across the quilt to make to long enough for the queen bed. I really liked this quilt. Scrappy and memories, together. I used gold thread and a simple design.

Finished a t-shirt quilt for a customer today. It really looks black. Well, it is not. It is a navy modelly. The back is black. This is what the granddaughter wanted. Was quilted with black thread. Really hard to work with. I hope I dont get another black one again. This will be a graduation gift from grandmother.

Orangeburg County Fair

Not Lost

No pictures for now. I am not lost. Life got in the way of my quilting this week. My Dad had to go back in the hospital. He has surgery on his Achillies tendon 4 weeks ago, had the cast off 1 week ago and the insision came open and got infected. They had to go back in and debribe it. Now he has a vacumm thing on it sucking out the infection. ULCK is right. He may need plastic surgery to replace skin. And they may have to repair the first surgery. Wont know until they get rid of the infection. So, please think of my Dad. He just turned 82 in Sept. and is in good health. He has always been very active and I know this has slowed him down a lot. My stepmom had been taking great care of him.

Hopefully I will get some new pictures up this week. I am playing with my crumb blocks today, between football games.

Red Star at Nite

So, What do you think? My own design! Yes, I know traditional, but that is ok. I have been wanting to do something with toile, so here it is. I was inspired by Charlotte Angotti, after seeing her at Greater Columbia Quilters in Aug. She used large prints with large snowball blocks to show them off. So, off I went. I have also wanted to do a red quilt. Two for one. Still have to put the binding on. Out of the red, so will have to be the black. Originally I was going to use the white with black as the inner border, but it didnt work, so I used the red from the binding. Like it allot. Tried to quilt free motion, from the front of the longarm, couldnt see where I was quilting. I used white thread. So swapped to a pano and worked great. So busy you cant see the quilting anyway.

How do you like my name for the quilt? I am new at naming quilts.

Crumb Along

What is this?? Jo over at Jo's Country Junction is hosting a crumb along. She is showing how to make different crumb blocks. Something new every Tuesday. I got a late start, so just got the first week finished and started on the 2nd week. The first week was Flying Geese. I used bonus half square triangle to make my wonky geese. Then just built the block up so I could square it up to 6 1/2 inches, which is the size of the ruler I am using. This is very freeing, because you dont worry about matching seams. The "Crumb" are left overs and scraps", dont throw it way, crumb it. LOL

The next ones are Wonky Stars. I used the dregs of my 2 inch squares to make these. I day dregs, because I have been using these up on other projects. May have to cut some more from the larger scraps. I need some lites. I really like these.

Next is a heart block, I will work on that this afternoon.

Mug Rugs

Mug Rugs, I need to make some gifts, so here they are. The finish 8 x 10. I used scraps from my 2 inch strip bin and fused them to solid backgrounds. The I just straight stitched around them, running off the edges and jumping from block to block. Another strip from the 2 1/2 inch bin made the binding. Warm and White batting. I think they look great. I got the idea from Karen at Quilt Frenzy scroll down and you will see why.

Customers Quilt

Bow Tucks Purse

Or should I say tote bag. I finally made a Bow Tucks Bag. These have been all over the Quilt Board. So, I ventured out. When I went to Knoxville to the AQS show in July, I bought a kit with the pattern to make this bag. Saturday I started, Sunday afternoon I sewed some more. Finally got all the parts made. Here they are. The directions say to use fusible fleece, which I did, and the quilt as desired. I quilted the sunflower part in a diamond going sideways grid and the dark bottom just straight lines. I quilted the lining further apart with a square grid on point. Using purple thread. I do like it. But boy this is taking forever! Some of the folks on the Board are make 4-6 in a weekend. How did they do this? Well, my friend Susan, Yes that is Susan in Aiken, told me I didnt have to do all that quilting if I used the fusible fleece. DUHHHH!! Susan knows. She make lots of bags and teaches bag classes in Aiken. I am not in Aiken. So sorry!!

Anyway, here it is Tuesday. I had to finish quilting Dottie's quilt yesterday. I finally got all the parts together. I still need a button for the closing, but that will come. And I would like some beads on the bows. Will have to raid my sons scout stuff to see what he may have, you never know. So, the unveiling!! TA DA Love it!!! turned out great. But next time, I wont quilt it.

Orangeburg Quilters Guild

At our Orangeburg Quilters guild about every 3 months we all make a block and then draw for it. Everyone has to win before your name can go back in the pot. This is the latest block. The block is 12 inch finished. We laid out the ones turned in so far (not due until Oct., mine is finished). They look great. I am not eligible, so I may just have to make this one for myself. I love the 3D effect.

Didnt get to sew this afternoon. Thunderstorms! Then was cooking supper, just started, and the power went off. So...... we had to go out to eat. Stuffed the food in the fridge. On the way out we found out what knocked the power out this time. A car hit a main power pole. I am sure there was more than one car involved. And I am sure there were injuries, if not fatalities. Most of that was gone, just the power company and a patrolman to help with the traffic. There was a smashed car in the ditch. I did say a quick prayer for whoever. And I felt bad about fussing about the power company, again. It wasnt their fault this time. This is the 3rd power outage in about 3 weeks.

So, hopefully I will get some quilting done tomorrow.

She had us laughing so much that I had tears just flowing. I thought Joyce, sitting next to me would fall on the floor laughing.

Wedding Trip

WOW it has been a few weeks since I posted. Lot of stuff has happened. My nephew Jon married Robin on Aug 5. So, we took the train to Northern Va. almost to DC. What was supposed to be a 9 hr ride was 11 hrs. I was tired, pooped, exhausted, leg cramps, ect...... You get the idea. There was this big guy sitting on the first seat of the car that snored all the way there, I mean all the way! except for potty breaks, then he would sit down and start up again. It was like a chain saw or worse. We got on in Charleston, SC and he got on in Florence, SC. He was still snoring when we got off, in Alexandria, Va. He didnt even wake up! Must have partied all nite the nite before. We got the the hotel about 10:15pm. The first thing I did was jump on the treadmill for 15 min. I had to stretch my legs, they hurt so much. Then a Tylenol and sleep. Forgot, we accompanied my Dad and step mom on the train.

The next evening we went to the rehearsal dinner and it was great. Sat with my sister and her husband, Dad and step mom, us and a friend of theirs that came from Ok. for the wedding. This is the Grooms cake. Lord of the Rings theme. My sister made it. She did a great job. The bottom was chocolate pound cake, the middle was yellow cake and the top was red velvet. What a great cake. We were on the 2nd floor with the Occoquan River running behind the building, a beautiful view.

Here is the Happy couple after the wedding. This was during picture time, so quality isnt great, but I love it. Isnt Robing beautiful. I loved her dress. The wedding was held at Old Bridge United Methodist Church in Woodbridge Va. A great church if you are in the area. They will be living in Woodbridge. Robin is a teacher, 6th grade, and Jon is an IT guy. Jon is about 6'4" and Robin is about 6", so perfect match. Other stuff matches great, too.
Here is another picture with my sister, Terri and her husband Dave. They are all good looking folks, dont ya think.

The trip home on the train was much better. We made it in 9 hrs and no snoring. I had a great time with my family.

Arkansas Crossroad

Dont you just love the colors. This is my version of Arkansas Crossroads. I made a bunch of 16 patches from 2 inch squares and then the rest came together. This is the 4th quilt from these scraps. I still have more, LOL. I am making 16 patches, with alternate light colors and brights, then will make pinwheels for the alternate block to add to the 16 patches. That should use up most of these 2 inch squares. I will have to cut some for the pinwheels, but not much. I didnt buy any fabric for this quilt, or the one in progress. YEA!! a stash busting I will go.

Well, what am I going to do with it. My step niece just had a baby a week ago, so it will go off in the mail to her tomorrow. It is hard to part with, I love this little quilt. It is so bright and cheery, so I know the new baby will enjoy it for years.

Birthday Suprise

For those of you that dont know. I had a birthday last week. My stepson sent the most wonderful package. The top fabric is 3 fat quarters of Route 66 fabrics......I see a purse in there. The bottom 5 fat quarters are Indian petroglyphs. Back at the first of July He took a trip to the Grand Canyon. As they came into Williams, AZ. He hollered STOP!! there is a quilt shop. So, he went in and a nice lady helped him pick out 2 bundles for me. And a Quilt Diva pin. He asked for fabric of the local area. He did good. He said he now knows what a fat quarter is. I would like to thanks the Lady at Quilters Mercantile, on Route 66 in Williams, AZ. You were great. If you every get out there, check them out.

MY Quilt

This is one of my quilts. It is called confetti log cabin, a pattern from Quiltmaker. I am going to quilt feathers in the light rows. Not sure what in the dark, yet. Still thinking on that.

Here is the border, so far. It is an navy modelly fabric with gold thread. This is what I have so far. Will do something in the arches????

Next is a picture of a dowel I put in the hem of my main leaders, before the zippers. This will help keep the leaders straight, instead of getting smileys from stretching uneven. I hope this works. They came from Lowe's, in the wiring department. Used for fishing wires in walls. Really a cool idea. They were to long and DH cut off to fit. Comes in 3ft sections that screw together. The screw ends are already there for you.

Irish Chain

Another customer quilt finished. This is Barbara's first quilt. It was a Quilt in A Day pattern, that she said took years....... Turned out very good. Quilted with an all over design that she picked out. I added the binding and now all she has to do is sew it down. She is thrilled. Now on to other quilts for Barbara.

Just had to show off my new toy. I bought an Oliso iron when in Knoxville. They were on sale at a great price at the AQS show. Well, got it out today and had fun. It has little legs that it sits on. You dont have to stand it up or knock it over. You just touch the handle the legs draw up and iron you will go. Let go of the handle and the legs pop up!!! Amazing. It irons well also. I did the binding on the quilt above, making a nice crease in the fabric. Very nice. Steams great, heats up fast. The booklet says it will stay hot for 30 min before shutting off. And then will heat back up fast. For those of you that dont know, I needed a new iron anyway. Ranger, when he was a smaller puppy, chewed the cord just a little. Well, DH put electrical tape on it, but I never felt good about it. So, new iron and I am happy.

I forgot to tell you about the best new thing I learned in Knoxville. I took a class called Zentangles. This is a kind of doodling, drawing and meditation combined. You can check it out on their website http://www.zentangle.com/ or their blog http://www.zentangle.blogspot.com/ This is not my drawing, just an example from the Zentangle website. I cant draw, but I can do this. They give step by step directions. If you go to the newsletter page and look for the How to Draw ...... you will find the directions for different tangles and some examples of their use. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have, so far.

Surprise, Surprise

Forgot to tell you. DH said he was going to have a surprise for me when I got home from Knoxville. Last time he did that, he painted the upstairs bathroom BRIGHT Yellow!! So, I was a little nervous to say the least. When I drove up this is what I found. Great isnt it. He screened in the front porch. Even made a doggie door for the 4 legged ones. Roada F. Tripp can come visit now. What fun. Now is is working on the side stoop. It is framed up. Needs paint and screen to be finished. He done good.

Quilted this yesterday. I turned it around in my program, but blogger kept putting it sideways. I havent figured out how to fix this yet. Great baby quilt. I free motion quilted, swirls looks like ocean.

Knoxville AQS Quilt Show

Last week I went to Knoxville to the AQS quilt show. I went with Joyce and her sister Pat and Roada. Roada's full name is Roada F. Tripp. You can learn all about Roada at her blog here. She has pictures of our shop hop to Knoxville, all around the quilt show and even a nite out on the town.

Joyce, Dee, Wilima and I took machine quilting classes from Kimmy Brunner. Such fun. We learned to draw feathers in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Now to put them on the quilts. We are not supposed to put pictures of the show on our blogs. Because they sell a CD of the show. But I just had to post one. This is one cool star. Dont ya think.

Wedding Presant

My sisters oldest child is getting married Aug. 5. This is the quilt she made for them. she made the top and sent it to me to quilt. Finished it today. Now to mail back to her, so she can get the binding on. It turned out great. I used gold thread and quilted with a swirl design. I think they will be happy with it. The future DIL pick out the border fabric and Terri pulled colors from it to make the quilt. I know you cant see the border good, but it is brown with small flowers of these different colors.

Another UFO bites the dust, yea!! This is my class from 2010 QSC Pieceable Retreat. The class was a mystery quilt. The name of the quilt is the Maltese Star, after.... You guessed it the Maltese Falcon. This is the second mystery class I have taken from Nancy Miller. It is always fun and a great quilt.

The Lydia Project Bags

The Lydia Project gives bags to women undergoing treatments for cancer. Volunteers make the bags. They send pre-cut kits and off the sewers go. I have know about this for a few years. The director has been after me to make bags. After going on a quilt retreat with my Aiken quilt friends, where we made bags, I decided to keep making bags. So they sent me 5 kits. I made them and sent them back. Now I have 5 more to make. Maybe a good July 4th project. They are fully lined and wonderful colors. Disappearing Nine Patch. Made for a class I taught at our quilt shop, A Stitch-N-Time, Again. I had 4 wonderful students and we learned a lot. Three of there were nurses, thank goodness we had no cut thumbs. LOL

Sorry, I havent Blogged in awhile. I have been here. Been having back trouble. Better now and on the way to recovery. Lots of tests. Torn disc at L5, effecting the sciatic nerve down my right leg. on pain meds and doing physical therapy and feeling much better. now. finally got some quilting caught up, so I have some pic to show. Yea!! pic are the best.

Verity, antique lone star. Her husbands grandmother pieced this. I struggled a long time before I quilted it, because it was a little wobbly. But, the center was flat. which is great for these quilts.

Beaufort Quilt Show

Mothers Day weekend we went to Beaufort SC to see your son and go to the quilt show. We took William to lunch at a great place to eat. I had a shrimp burger. Boy was it good. Wayne had crab cakes that were great too. After lunch Wayne and I went to the quilt show. William said he would pass. No shocker there. LOL. Here are just a few pictures from the show. I hope you enjoy them.

This one is wool applique with lots of embellishments on it. The picture does not do it justice.

This was wonderful applique. Ok, pictures are sideways again. I cant seem to get it right tonite. Lol. I need my son to help me.

Beach Retreat

I had the chance to go on a beach retreat to quilt, with a group of friends from Aiken. Some one in their group couldnt go and they thought of me. It was wonderful and a great surprise. I knew several of the girls before and made new friends while quilting. My pictures didnt turn out. I lost them in the camera. What am I to do.........

I finished several UFO tops. Yea!!!! And I have quilted 2 of them. One was a t-shirt quilt for a customer. I hope the grad loves it. Her mom sure did. Next was a disappearing 9-patch. It is quilted and I will try to get a picture soon. Then came a kids quilt that I started at the state fair when doing demos back in Oct., still needs quilting. Will wait until I have several kids quilts and do all at once. I like to sew the backings together to load on the longarm. Then only one load for several small quilts. Finished my QSC retreat quilt top. Will quilt it next, may load tomorrow. Need to come up with a backing. The other think we all worked on was bags for The Lydia Project. Check it out at http://www.thelydiaproject.org/ They give chemo bags to cancer patients. You can have one sent to a friend in need. I made 5 bags and total I think we made over 33 bags. That was great work. I even had some more bag kits sent to me to make.

Donation quilt

Donation quilt for The Orangeburg Quilters Guild. Sorry it is sideways. It looks great in person. Queen size. Every year at our county fair one area guild gets to have a donation quilt. We take turns, and this year is our turn. That means lots of hard work for everyone in the guild, since we are a small group. We use the money raised to help with charity projects and bring in a teacher or 2. We only get this opportunity about every 7 or 8 years. So, you know we make the best of it.

Stash Busting

I am not really following the Stash Busters, I just cant keep up with it. But, I have been cleaning my fabric closet. About 1/3 of the way thru. While doing this I pulled fabrics for Childrens quilts. Our guild does childerns quilts every year for the Disabilities and Needs board. I made 11 kits and busted about 32 yards of fabric. Yea!!!! What a great way to use some of the vibrant fabrics. Will take the kits to guild meeting and give out. Only condition is they have to finish, completely and turn in by October. I think that is a fair deal.

Had to stop the cleaning and work on a few customer quilts. SO, back to the grind.

Beginning Quilting

I have been teaching a beginning quilting class at the quilt shop here. I have 4 students who are amazing. We laugh a lot and sew alot. And we are almost finished with our sampler quilt top. Here are some pictures of the progress. I am so proud of these ladies. One is missing due to a sick grandchild in the hospital. Hope she is well soon.

Susan's housed a la Bonnie Hunter pattern over at Quiltville. Susan did a great job with this top and I quilted it with an allover design. Too much color to do anything else. She loves it, too. The just squares is the backing. It is all 5 inch squares left over from another project. Way to go using up the scraps. I will have to add this to my to do list for after I finish those pesky UFO's

My Niece, Emily

I just have to tell you this story. If you already heard it, just skip this post. 2 weeks ago, another Friday nite checking emails and stuff, I got a text from Emily. Emily is my sister's daughter, she is 16. A little history. I have all boys, so she is my girl. We are in lower SC and they are in VA, near DC. So we visit about once a year. Last year for Christmas I made pillowcases for the nieces and nephews. Emily love Converse low top sneakers. They call them Chucks up there. I found some fabric with all colors of Chucks on it, so of course that was Emily's pillowcase. I got a big big hug. Anyway back to 2 weeks ago and the text.

Emily: Hi Aunt Vicki, this is Emily, your niece. Will you do me a favor?
Me: sure, what
Emily: make me another pillowcase
Me: sure, what kind
Emily: Buzz Lightyear ( you heard right)
Me: ok, but you will have to wait until I get to the city to find some. maybe a few weeks.
Emily: can I get it and send it to you.
Me: sure about 1 yard.

So, several days later I get a big envelope with Buzz Light year in it. I make the pillowcase and 2 more a little more fashionable for a 16yr old girl. I called my sister to tell her Buzz had flown the coop and was on the way back to Va. Emily sent a letter with the fabric. She had gone from a single bed to a queen and none, I mean none of the other pillowcases in the house would do. LOL. She offer to pay me. I told her never.

You know my sister could have made this for her. I just love Emily, and I know she loves me.

Later Emily: thanks lots love you so much.

Another one bites the dust

Another UFO finished!!! I had this finished last week, but just got a picture to post. This is Carolina Christmas Mystery form 2010, by Bonnie Hunter. She used green where I have blue, therefore the Christmas. That is me on the left and my friend Annette on the right, helping me hold it up for show and tell at the QSC Spring Meeting. As you can see the binding wasnt finished. But it is now. The border looks a little funny, but it is just sections of the reds I used in the quilt. I do like this quilt.

Shopping!!!

Yes, I have been shopping. I found about a cloth shop that closed Jan.31, this year. It was only open 2 years. It was about 45 min. from home and I just heard about it. Anyway, the owner is selling the stock that is left for 1/2 price. Yes, she has quilting cottons. Now, so do I. No, I didnt buy out the stock! Wish I could have, but did get a lot. Had several things in mind like childrens charity quilts and fabric for a One Block Wonder. I signed up for the OBW class at fall retreat. Hope I get in it. And that this fabric will work. Here are pictures.

What so you think about this for a One Block Wonder? I am really not sure. There is alot of orange!

What an exciting day. Tomorrow will be filled with excitement, too. It will be the last day of the beginner quilting class I have been teaching. We will be sashing and bordering. LOL. I cant wait to see how everyone's comes out. And I have to take pictures for Ya'll

It is time for me to come out from under my rock. Life has been sooo busy. We had our QSC, Quilters of SC, Spring Meeting here in Orangeburg last Sat. I am the spring registrar. So, was very busy. Of course Pat, the Chairperson was even more busy. But all went well and we had a great time. Food was good and there was plenty of it. The guest speaker was Susan K Cleveland, of Piping Hot Binding fame. The classes Friday and Sunday were full, plus I was busy, so I took her class Tuesday at Greater Columbia Quilt guild. The class was piping hot curves, macaroni. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. wish I had known her techniques when I was making my sons clothes. Long time ago..... he will be 23 on March 29.

Snow, again in SC??? yes, about 1/2 inch here this morning. Was gone by 11am. It never snows in the south, LOL. 3rd time this winter. Usually it is 1 time every 2 or 3 years. Cold, too.

Carpet was supposed to come today!! of course it didnt. Now should be Monday, I look for it on Tues. I hope Tues. while I am gone to Quilting. That would work great for me.

Anyway, I have been looking at my favorite blogs and dreaming. Oh, Yes, I got my new Bonnie Hunter book in the mail. Scraps and Shirttails, II. I am ready to sew. Oh, cant yet, got to finish those pesky UFO's. Lets see, do I want to work on the new curtains for my bed room or a UFO? Better work on the curtains. dont want anyone watching me sleep at nite, LOL.

No pictures tonite. Life has been crazy. DH painted our bedroom. took all the furniture out and was going to have the carpet cleaned. Well, said carpet is too bad to clean, so ordered new carpet. Another week living out of the laundry basket. Furniture on the back porch and drawers and bedding stacked in the living/dining room. DH pulled all the old carpet out, still have to empty the closet. How many shoes do you have?? I dont want to count. LOL. found tons of yarn under the bed. some I knew about, some I forgot about. I am sleeping in the spare bedroom. At least I have a bed to sleep in. DH is sleeping on the couch, his choice. There is room upstairs. I feel so disoriented.

Stuffed 168 envelopes of confirmations to QSC spring meeting. Took hours. Had to make sure those taking classes got the correct inserts. Will have about 70-100 more to do by next week end. the dead line is Feb.18, for those of you that are interested. Then I made 10 of the gifts we are giving out at the meeting. Cant show or tell you what they are. It is a Surprise. You will like it. Still need to come up with a block for the block challenge. Will have to put the thinking cap on, after the bedroom is back together.

Went to get a new cell phone last week. They talked me into an LG android. Dont really like it. every time I answer the thing, I cut the person off and have to call them back. I wanted a Blackberry. Went back today and they were out of Blackberry's. Will try again later this week. What a week and a day;

And then, the super bowl. Singers????? people, learn to sing. Where is Kate Smith. Or change the National Anthem to God Bless America. this is my pet peeve for today. LOL

Working on UFO today. I got to quilt some for ME!! This is Galaxy Star, king size. Its been sitting for several years. Lost track of time. I am quilting with black thread. Tried several thing, but just took away from all of the color. The back is shades of gold with stars. Very appropriate. I love the border fabric, too. DS came in while I was working on it and said, "who's that one for, not me I hope, it ugly". I told him its for me and he looked very relieved. Almost finished, but will have to wait for tomorrow.

UFO's, unfinished objects, for the unquilty out there. Greater Columbia Quilt Guild, of which I am a member, has issued a UFO challenge for 2011. You say, what is that jumble of a mess in the picture. UFO's. Here are some stacked up to be quilted. There are a few others also, 14 that I found. I am sure there is more hiding in there. LOL. I am going to add a list to my side bar and cross them off as I go. Hopefully I will get these done. There are a few king sized ones. The one on top on the right is my Galaxy Star, OH my! Anita said I had to have it finished by Spring Meeting. It is KING. I better get started. Wish me luck.

Ok, I am still alive. Nancy reminded me I havent updated my blog in awhile. Soooo. I have had a cold/sinus thing going, cant seem to shake it. Been trying to catch up on customer quilts, getting close. Went yesterday to our new longarm group in Columbia. This was our 2nd get together. If you are from the middle of SC and have rails, you are welcome to join us. We are sharing and learning from each other. A great group.

RRCB!!! I am still working on Bonnie Hunters mystery quilt. Putting the hst around the blocks, have about half finished. So, I am a turtle. It will get done, when it gets done. I am enjoying the process.

We have a new quilt shop in town. The only one! Now I can buy a spool of thread, or anyother need without driving to Columbia, 45 miles away. They have asked me to teach some beginner quilting, so I am going to teach a sampler class to start with. I have used this for several beginner classes in the past. It will get me out of the house some.

Sorry, no pictures at this time. Will try to take some of my RRCB later today, so you can see the progress.

Omigosh! Finished

Finished the Omigosh! YEAH!!!! I have had it finished for 2 weeks, but lost the cord that goes from the camera to the computer. Finally figured I can insert the sm card into the printer and down load the pictures. A DUHHH moment. LOL the full size is hard to see the details, so here is a close up also. I quilted it with Linda V Taylor's Texas Fan, small. Looks great. I love it, but heavy with all those seam allowances. A friend said this is my Dear Jane, as in once in a life time. I agree. But, I did it, I really did it.

Binding, binding and more binding. Seems like it is taking me forever to get the binding sewn down on this quilt. And I have to do a sleeve. But the label is on!!!

I have been busy with customer quilts. Our guild donation quilt, others made the blocks, 16 inch, so 12 blocks. I added the sashing and borders and have to quilt it. Someone else will need to do the binding. hint, hint.

Also I am spring registrar for Quilters of SC spring meeting. So that has had me busy. We need to stuff envelopes and hopefully get them mailed by the end of the week.

Oh, and Bonnies mystery quilt!! trying to work that in too.

For those of you that dont know. We had to shorten our trip. After the quilt show we went to Barstrop to visit Diana and her kids, our niece. Her husband is in Afghanistan, so it was fun to visit. Her mom had a birthday and we really surprised her.

We got to Austin and took the tour of the State Capital building. It was great. Any way, I had gotten a scratchy throat and sneezing. Wayne decided we should come home, so we did. Missed seeing San Antonio. Will have to go back another time.

Let me show you a little more from my trip to Quilt festival. I met Karen Overton, whom I have been blogging with. What great fun. Yes, I was tired.. It was the end of the day. I dont know how Karen stayed so perky. Karen is a A-1 longarm dealer and maned, or is that womaned, the booth at Quilt Festival. It was great to finally meet Karen. While I was at the A-1 booth, I met Jamie Wallden, bought his CD and had him autograph it. Great fun.

Wayne and I made to to Houston today. Boy we are pooped. got to the hotel around 4:30. Went to the preview show at 7. Didnt see all the quilts, but will be back tomorrow. Vicki Perry, I saw your quilt in the Hoffman Challenge. took a picture. We got thur about 3/4ths of the quilts. Will check out the rest in the morning....... Then off to the vendors. Hope my feet hold up. The bottom of my feet are sore. Will wear different shoes tomorrow. Wish I had a scooter, LOL.

SC State Fair

My friends, Pat and Verity and I went to the state fair to do demos for QSC. There were others there also. We took quilting to work on. I got a charity quilt top pieced. Yeah!! The power went off in our building, so we ate lunch. Yes, Vivian, I got a corn dog, a double one no less. It was sooo good. LOL The quilts were great but hard to take pictures the way they are hung, up high around the edge of the building.

Much fun was had by all and we met lots of nice people. My featherweight always draws lots of attention, esp. from the men.

SHHHHH!!!! Dont tell anyone, but I finished the Omigosh top. Will not post a picture until I get it quilted. Give me about a week or so.

Working at the SC State Fair tomorrow. Will representing QSC for a sit and sew demo day at the fair. Will be fun. I will work on some children's quilt tops for future charity quilts. I get to meet so many nice folks and talk about quilting all day. If you are there stop by the Moore building, I will be there from 10am to about 4pm. Some others are coming also. And if you cant get there until after work I think Sandra and Anita are coming at 2pm and staying late.

3 of us went to see Bonnie Hunters trunk show in Charleston, last nite. DH drove us, so that made it much better. It was good to see Bonnie again. We met on the internet before her move to Columbia, SC. need me! Now she is in NC, so I try to catch her when I can. We enjoyed the show. DH said she has sooo much energy, he is right. It makes me want to sit and sew leaders and enders. But I have to finish Omigosh first. Then retreat quilt and I should be ready for Bonnie's new mystery in Nov.

I am typing on the lap top. the Desk top is at the computer doctor. Got a virus yesterday. major. Not used to this keyboard and keep hitting the wrong key or holding it down to long. At least I have my internet., yea!!

Got a stomach bug today. Feeling better, but didnt get any quilting done.

Finally I have an update on the Omigosh for you, a picture. Dont look at the dirty board cover. I have rows made.... Yeah!!! I even sewed some together in pairs last nite. It takes forever to sew the pairs together. I am pinning at every seam to match it up properly and believe me there are lots of seams.

This was year before lasts mystery quilt. Thanks Bonnie for a great pattern and getting me out of my box with colors. I just love this quilt.

Omigosh! still working on this quilt. Got 5 rows together in rows. I might be able to see the end of this??? LOL Had to stop for a few days to get over the stomach virus. 48 hrs.You dont want it!

Now I am getting ready for quilt retreat. I am taking a Mystery quilt class. I have just finished cutting all my clues and have them bagged up. Now to wash close and pack my sewing machine and I will be ready to go. Cant wait to see all my friend from all over SC. It is so much fun to renew friendships and make new ones.

Report on back. Got to have more tests. ULCK!!! the nerve test. You know where they do the electric shock stuff. Will be about 2 to 3 weeks to get an appt for that. SOOO, I plug along.

NOW for the good news. I might go to Houston to Quilt Festival. DH and I were talking last nite about what to do for our anniversary this year, 25. He asked if there were any big quilt shows coming up. Of course, LOL. We are thinking of flying down, renting a car and doing sight seeing after the show, NASA, San Antonio, Austin. We have a niece in Austin. So sounds like fun. I think this may make my back feel better???

Ok, I know I have to get you some pictures. That is the best part of bloggin, so will try to get a few soon.

Havent posted in awhile. No pictures tonite. Still plugging along on my Omigosh! quilt. I have 33 of the 111 Shoo Fly blocks finished. Sooo hopefully it wont be too much longer.

Now to my back. I have been having problems for just over a year with my lower back. Then the bottom of my feet started bothering me. Stinging, or itching, burning. Not Diabetes, had that checked. Mussel soreness in my thighs and weakness in my legs at times. Had a MRI and found out I have a torn disc at L5, that is lower back. That is what is causing all the problems. I go Wed. to see a neurosurgeon to find out what we can do about this. In the mean time, no heavy lifting and try to be careful with it. I know you are wondering how I did this, so am I. I have had several falls over the years, no telling when it was damaged. Will keep all of you, my friends, posted.

UPDATE!!! The 4 patches in the square and a square are done, finished, finally. Yeah!!! 444 of them. Here is a picture. The next step is to make 444 half square triangles to make the shoo fly blocks with. I went ahead a made a few, before cutting all of them out. I just had to see what it was going to look like. I am loving it. sorry one is fuzzy.

It is to darn hot to blog or breath or anything. Hope all of you are surviving this heat. Cant wait for Fall weather. Here is a picture of our new dog, Ranger. Bottom picture. I got him about 6 weeks ago. He was 4 months old. The last one in litter. He has grown, and is big for a Yorkie. He also has floppy ear just like his mom. But he is soo cute. The vet techs call him wild man. that is about right. Top picture is Patch the Wonderdog. He is wonder why I did this to him. LOL.. they are getting along ok and even playing tug of war with toys. Wayne watch your toes. LOL

Jewel Box

Here is the Jewel Box I made for my niece for her high school graduation. I still have to get a label on it and the quilt to her. I am going to make a label today! I cut out all the pieces, except the border with my Accuquilt Studio. this is an all scrappy quilt, with the background the same fabric. I just love it. I know I will have to make another one to keep. But, first I have to finish that Omigosh.

Maybe I am caught up a little. maybe.

4 patches are finished, all 880 of them and maybe a few extra. The next step is to make these the centers of square in a square blocks that finish 2 inches. Here is one I did to see what they would look like. That is a quarter by it. Small!!! Omigosh. After that I have to make 880 half square triangles and the take all these parts and make Shoo Fly blocks for the alternate block. Months and months to go, haha,hehe, hoho. Yes, I am losing it.

I have been missing for awhile. I am still here. Been busy. Went to the mountains, in NC, to visit my friend GA. We shopped and sewed, till we dropped. Had a great time. On the way home I stopped in Clinton and got another dog. Yes, I have lost my mind. His name is Ranger and he is another Yorkie. He is 4 1/2 months old now. Patch is jealous. But this morning they were playing together for the first time. Yeah!! I know, you want pictures. I will when I can get him to be still. I think he has ADD. LOL Now if I can get this house training thing across to Ranger!!!. ulck!.

In the mean time I have been sewing a little. I finished the Double 9 patches for the Omigosh quilt. 110 of them! Now on to the next step 444, 4 patches.

Graduation!

William, ds, graduated from college this past Sat. YEAH!!! It was also his Dad's birthday. What a great gift. We are so proud of him. He graduated from Brevard College, in Brevard NC. A great small school. His degree is in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education, with a Biology minor, and he has a 3.15 gpa. YEAH! again. He is working at Boy Scout camp this summer and after that who knows. What a great kid. I know this is the back of his head. The college was taking picture, so will post when we get them.

Hi, I haven't posted in about 2 weeks. Life has been crazy. Here is a picture and update of the Omigosh! quilt. This is 563 nine patch blocks, I need 550, but a few extras wont hurt. They are 2 inches at this point and will finish one and one/half inches. The next step is to turn them into double nine patches, with a blank block as the alternate. I am using shirting or shirting type fabrics. If sew a few at a time and they WILL get done! Actually I already have about 2o together. The total is to be 110.

I finished another t-shirt quilt for a customer. It turned out good. I took the small patches from the front of the shirts and appliqued them around the border. I really liked this.

Heart Quilts

QSC Heart quilts are on display at the Orangeburg Art Center this week and next week. I helped Pat Barthlowmew and her husband hang them Monday. Here are just 2 pictures. There are 68 quilts. We are having a reception Tuesday nite. It should be fun. The quilts will be touring SC thru November. If you have a chance to see them, please do.

I found Thistles growing along the side of the road near our house. Never have seen them here before. They are very pretty. The pictures dont do them justice.

Wayne's Haircut

It has been a year since DH, Wayne retired from the SCNG. He let his hair and beard grow for 1 year. The year was over last week. YEAH!! I took him to the Barber shop. It took over and hour. He looks soo much better. Here is before and after.

I had better clarify, I saw Lyn Johnson working on this quilt at retreat last fall. Came home and ordered the pattern. For the record, I started it on April 4, 2010. I have completed enough 9 inch strip sets to make the 9-patch blocks. Lots and lots of them. Now for the hard part, sewing them into 9-patches. No pictures tonight, would be the same as last nite.
